Shockwave vs. PRP & Stem Cell Injections

Same Goal. Very Different Price Tag, Needle Count And Starting Point.

PRP and cell-based injections and shockwave are both trying to do the same thing — restart healing in tissue that stopped repairing itself. The difference is how they get there, what they cost, and which one you should try first.

The Common Ground

Both Are Regenerative. Neither Is A Painkiller.

Unlike cortisone, both approaches aim to change the tissue rather than quiet the symptom. That’s why we offer both categories at Sports Performance — and why the real question isn’t which is ‘better,’ it’s which one your problem calls for.

How PRP & Cell-Based Injections Work

Blood (or in some protocols, other tissue) is drawn, concentrated, and injected into the injured structure — usually under ultrasound guidance — delivering a high dose of growth factors directly to the target. Strength: a large, concentrated biological dose placed exactly where the damage is.

How Shockwave & EMTT Work

Acoustic and magnetic energy stimulate the tissue to produce its own growth factors and new blood vessels, session after session, with no needle and nothing introduced into the body. Strength: repeatable, non-invasive, dramatically lower cost, no downtime.

The Order That Makes Sense

Why We Almost Always Start With Shockwave

Not because it’s better in every case — because of what it costs you to find out.

Lower Cost To Try

A full shockwave course costs a fraction of a single PRP procedure. If it resolves the problem — and for tendinopathy and fasciitis it very often does — you never needed the injection.

Nothing To Recover From

No needle, no flare, no weeks of restricted activity. If it doesn’t work, you’ve lost nothing and every other option is still fully available to you.

It Makes Injections Work Better

If you do go on to an orthobiologic injection, arriving with better local blood supply and healthier surrounding tissue is not a disadvantage. Many of our patients use shockwave to prepare for — and then recover from — an injection.

Already had an injection? Post-injection recovery is one of our specialties — it’s the entire reason we built Stem Cell Recovery Experts. What you do in the 12 weeks after an orthobiologic injection has a great deal to do with whether it takes.

Questions

PRP, Stem Cell & Shockwave FAQ

Which one actually works better?

It depends entirely on the diagnosis. For chronic tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis and calcific tendonitis, shockwave has a long track record and is a reasonable first line. For a focal cartilage or intra-articular joint problem, a guided injection may reach something shockwave can’t. That’s precisely what the Discovery Visit sorts out.

Can I do both?

Yes, and it’s a common combination — shockwave to improve the tissue environment before an injection, and again during the recovery window afterward. We coordinate the timing with the physician doing the injection.

Do you do PRP or stem cell injections here?

We are a physical therapy and regenerative technology clinic — we deliver shockwave, EMTT and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and we work alongside the physicians who perform the injections. That also means we have no financial incentive to push you toward an injection.

I had an injection and I'm not better. Is it too late for shockwave?

No. This is one of the most common reasons people come to us. Bring your procedure notes and imaging to the conversation.

Is shockwave 'regenerative' in the same sense?

It works by stimulating your own biology — new blood vessel formation and growth factor release in the treated tissue — rather than by introducing concentrated biologics. Different mechanism, same intent: repair rather than mask.
